Jones Longhorns

BOYS

Coach: Derek Verner

18-19 Record: 9-17

One quality head coach Derek Verner is excited to see from his team this year is their unselfishness on the court. He believes come playoff time, this team has the build to be dangerous. Corbin Talley (6-3, Sr.) averaged 11.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game last year. Talley will start at forward with Elijah Reed (5-8, Jr.) at guard. Reed averaged 3.8 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists per contest a year ago. Another guard to watch is Miguel Ocampo (5-6, Sr.). The senior knocked down 3.7 points a game last year and is a threat to shoot the three ball. Carson May (6-5, So.) will occupy one of the forward spots. May should see his numbers increase this season. Isaac Foster (6-3, Jr.) is a big, immovable force in the paint. Also look for Tye Tucker (6-3, Jr.) to see time down low as coach Verner looks to mix up the combinations and keep the opposing teams guessing. Other guys to watch include P.J. Davis (6-3, Sr.) at forward, Strong Moore (6-4, Sr.) at forward, Emmett Murphy (6-2, So.) at guard and Syler Berry (5-10, Jr.) forward. Berry shot 66 percent from three-point-land last season. Curtis Fincham and Kyler Brackett will assist this season.

GIRLS

Coach: Jenni Holbrook

18-19 Record: 24-3

With all five starters retuning for the 2019-20 season, the excitement level for Jones basketball is high. Coach Jenni Holbrook said this is a “seasoned team” with a deep bench. “We will be able to play several different lineups. We are committed to hard work,” said coach Holbrook. Caley Young (6-0, Sr.) will start at forward where she averaged 14.5 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. Her production is big, but she is not alone. Bailey Ely (5-7, Sr.) can score and take games over as well. Ely averaged 11 points a game shooting 54 percent from the field. Alex Farmer (5-8, Sr.) averaged 5.0 points and is capable of playing guard or forward. Courtney Vaughn (5-7, Sr.) will start at point guard giving the offense a solid ball handler in the backcourt. Vaughn averaged 3.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. Tirzah Moore (6-1, Jr.) and Trinity Moore (6-1, Jr.) are two players to contend with on the paint. Tirzah averaged 11.7 points and 4.4 rebounds last year. Trinity contributed 4.0 points a game and is looking to up those numbers this season. Also watch Taylor Ely (5-7, Sr.) at guard and Boston Berry (5-7, Fr.) at the point. Penni Young and David Quinn are assisting coach Holbrook this season.
