The first year of a two-year transition period to 8-man football went well for veteran coach Kenny Hokit and the Savages, but year 2 promises to be more challenging in a number of ways. The first challenge will be replacing an almost all-senior crew. “We lost some really good seniors,” said Hokit, “but have some good freshmen coming in.” One big plus, though, will be the return of quarterback Dakota Gragg (5-9, 170, Sr.) and another senior in lineman Trace McMinn (5-9, 160). The rest of the offense is relatively inexperienced but has a solid commitment to the program. In the backfield with Gragg will be Levi Ritter (5-10, 180, Jr.) at running back along with Caden Birckel (5-9, 160, Jr.). Gragg will throw to one of those two out of the backfield or to wide receiver Blaize Bray (6-1, 185, Jr.). Clint Barnes (6-1, 250 Jr.) brings size to the O-line at the center spot. Look for the Savages to open things up a little more as Jonathan Miller takes on the duties of offensive coordinator this season.

Quinton will continue to play a pressure-style gap-control defense with many of the same folks that are on offense. Gragg and Ritter will go at linebacker along with Rocky Purdom (6-1, 200, Jr.). Barnes is down front at defensive end and is joined by Colt Short (6-2, 195, So.), while sophomore Ryan Clark (5-8, 140) holds down the secondary for the Savages. Quinton once again plays an independent schedule before being assigned a district next year during reassignment. “We’re looking to build on a great season from last year,” Hokit said. “Our schedule will be tougher this year but we are looking forward to the challenge.”
