Alva head coach Mike Shklar is excited for the 2019 season with support from his coaching staff of Ryne Wilson, Marcus Mead, Dalton Beeler, Derrick Thomas and Henry Hornsby. They will return seven starters to a spread offense that will focus on getting the ball in space and playing physical up front. “We expect to compete at a high level, while playing fast on both sides of the ball,” Shklar said. “What we lack in experience we believe we can make it up with speed and intelligence.” Slot receiver Reece Martin (5-7, 155, Sr.) will be counted on to lead the receiving core. Wide receivers Gavin Perez (5-10, 155, Jr.) and Zayin Tiger (6-0, 155, Jr.) are also offensive assets who will be essential in getting points on the board. A young but potentially game-changing force on the field this year is sophomore quarterback Kaden Slater (6-1, 190). As a freshman last year Slater completed 72 percent of his passes for 256 yards in only four games. The run game will be dominated by senior running backs Dalton Hess (5-9, 185) and Todd Ruwaldt (5-9, 170), both aiming to make an impact for their final season with the Goldbugs. Cole Wiersig (5-11, 215, Jr.) provides a strong point on the offensive line.

The Goldbugs’ defense is young up front but energetic and ready to move. Defensive tackles Domonick Covert (6-3, 285, Jr.) and David Carpenter (5-9, 210, Jr.) anchor the line and provide run-stopping force. Todd Ruwaldt will serve as a linebacker on this side of the ball, along with Tanner Butcher (5-10, 175, So.). In the secondary, cornerback Reece Martin will continue to rack up tackles, interceptions and deflections. Look for defensive back Gavin Perez to make an impact as well.
