A new-look formation with familiar faces returning, the Mustangs are ready to bolt from the gate with an explosive offense that includes six returning starters for new coach Greg Wise. Alex McLemore (5-10, 150, Jr.), who grabbed 38 catches last year at wide receiver, moves to quarterback this season to lead the offensive attack, with Brett Chambers (6-0, 240, Jr.) and Davon Clarke (6-0, 210, Fr.) tabbed to pick up the ground game. When Wise calls for the air raid, Josh Killion (5-10, 155, Jr.) joins Easton Smith (5-10, 140, So.) as go-to receivers for McLemore, while Gavin James (5-10, 255, So.) anchors the efforts on the line of scrimmage. “We want to play fast from a variety of formations to capitalize on our explosive potential on every snap of the ball,” Wise said.

With six starters back wearing the Mustangs’ colors, Wise is optimistic the defensive unit will play with confidence as well as with an attacking style on every snap. The 3-3 stack showcases a pair of punishing junior defenders, including Joseph Caldwell (5-8, 160, Jr.), who totaled 58 stops a year ago, and Alex McLemore who recorded 75 tackles last season.  Adding to the defensive muscle is Brett Chambers, who made 55 tackles in 2018 with secondary support from Killion, a quick-to-the-football defensive back who made 71 tackles as a sophomore. Dakota Jones (6-2, 260, So.) and the freshman Clarke could be difference makers as well with muscle and mobility. “We’ve made big gains in all areas,” Wise said. “The kids’ commitment to our offseason conditioning, physically and mentally, is resulting in total team confidence and readiness for this season.”
