The first order of business for the Ironheads this fall will be finding a replacement at quarterback for Hunter Hiler. On the plus side, whoever ends calling the cadence will be protected by an aggressive, experienced line that includes Daniel Atwood (6-1, 285, Sr.), Zack Mills (6-1, 200, Sr.) and Kendan Watson (6-0, 250, Jr.). The running game will be in the hands of Zac Anderson (6-1, 210, Sr.). Returning to anchor an explosive receiving corps will be Logan Kreitemeyer (6-1, 185, Sr.), a VYPE Top 100 pick for 2018, along with Jase Pippenger (5-11, 175, Sr.).

“We have a complete returning offensive line that will need to step up for a first-year quarterback,” said Newton.

Possibly aiding the Ironheads in their quest to make the playoffs for a third straight year will be a drop from Class 3A to 2A this year where they’ll see a new group of opponents though the McIntosh County battle with Checotah will still be fought.

“We should have some good experience from this group with most being at least two-year starters,” said Newton. “We’ll run a base 3-4 set and attack the offense with multiple fronts and blitzes.”

As with the offense, finding the missing pieces up front will be a key to Eufaula’s ability to slow down opposition offenses as Watson is the lone returner there. There’s a good core of experience with nine starters back including linebackers Anderson and Pippenger. The secondary should be the heart of the Ironhead attacking defense with Kreitemeyer, Watson, and John Bailey (6-0, 175, Sr.). As noted it’s a mostly new schedule for the Ironheads with the opening game being an early test according to Newton.

“We open up against Vian,” he said.  “They always do a good job and we’ll find out early how good we have a possibility to be.”
