Returning seven starters from its run to the Class 2A state semifinals, the Alva High School football team has plenty of firepower left for another deep run. Led by quarterback Mitchel Meyer (6-0, 185, Sr.) who passed for 2,600 yards, ran for 995 and scored 43 touchdowns, he will definitely want to be the guiding force of the team in his senior season. Dalton Hess (5-9, 180, Jr.) is the next player who will undoubtedly be a factor this season for the Goldbugs at the running back position. Running for 1,363 yards on 185 carries, Hess also scored 17 touchdowns, so he is no stranger to making big plays. Alva’s leading returning receiver is Reece Martin (5-8, 155, Jr.) who had 15 catches for 208 yards and two TDs in 2017. Martin and Meyer will need to build a strong connection if Alva hopes to make another trek through the playoffs.

Looking at the playmakers on defense, Arturo Cisneros (5-9, 205, Sr.) is the leader of this unit at middle linebacker. Cisneros is the leading returning tackler with 160 in 2017, three for loss. With six returning starters, Alva will have some talent to replace in a defense that likes to switch things up and play a lot of different formations. A star on both sides of the ball, Reece Martin also plays a huge role on defense as a type of utility man. With 41 tackles, five interceptions and 27 deflections a year ago, Martin will have his hands full on Friday nights. Speaking on the upcoming season, Alva coach Taylor Schwerdtfeger said his team is excited about the future after making the semis last season. There’s a lot of excitement around the team and they are ready to go make things happen.
