OFFENSE

After finishing 8-3 in 2017 the Pioneers are ready to settle the difficult landscape that is 6A-II.

Seven starters return to the Stillwater offense this year, possibly none bigger than Gunnar Gundy (6-1, 185, Jr.) who will be the Pioneers’ starting quarterback. As a sophomore Gundy passed for 1,325 yards and threw 12 touchdown passes to just one interception. Anthony Bland (6-3, 190, Jr.) and Jake Smithton (6-2, 183, Jr.) figure to be Gundy’s top two targets on the outside this season.

Another big help to Gundy and the passing game will be Stillwater’s rushing attack. The big name for Stillwater this year when it comes to running the football will be Qwontrel Walker (5-8, 178, So.) who ran for 1,459 yards as a freshman.

Stillwater will also have a very strong offensive line led by Sam Smith (6-5, 302, Sr.) and Hazer Xanders (6-4, 290, Sr.).

“Offensively we can pound the ball in the run game when we need to. We are big, and physical on our offensive line and have a talented backfield. We also have a great passer and a lot of talent at wide receiver which makes us dangerous,” Stillwater head coach Tucker Barnard said.

DEFENSE

Stillwater should be strong at every level of its defense this season as they operate out of a 4-3 base.

At linebacker Winston Watkins (6-1, 211, Sr.) is back after recording 97 tackles as a junior. Joining Watkins at linebacker will be Sean Preston (5-9, 180, Jr.) who had 66 tackles of his own last fall.

On the defensive line Stillwater will be led by Artie Smith (6-1, 248 Sr.) who had 28 tackles to his credit a year ago. Luke McEndoo (6-1, 240, So.) will also play on the defensive line this year for the Pioneers.

In the secondary look for Tevin Williams (6-1, 171, So.) and Garrick Martin (6-2, 171, Jr.) to be two of the top playmakers.

Overall Barnard said he expects big things from his team this year.

“We have really high expectations this year. We have been really pleased with our progress on and off the field as a whole program. Our numbers are better than ever, our talent is at least as good as it has been and we have better depth than ever.”
